Neutropenia
Common causes include:
- Infection
Eg. Sepsis, salmonella, Brucella
Epstein Barr, CMV, influenza
HIV testing should be offered for any unexplained neutropenia
- Drug induced
Eg. Antithyroid medications, macrolides, procainamides, clozapine, sulphasalazine
- Autoimmune disease and Chronic Inflammatory Disease
Eg. Rheumatoid, Sjogren’s
- Nutritional deficiency
Eg. folate, B12, copper
- Bone marrow pathology
Eg. Leukaemia, myelodysplasia, lymphoma, aplastic anaemia
Rarer causes include congenital.
The normal range is lower for those of African ethnic descent.
