Lipid Clinic


Run by Dr Simon Fleming at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and the West Cornwall Hospital

The clinic aims to identify and treat patients with familial dyslipidaemia. The clinic will aim to:

1)      Confirm the correct diagnosis

2)      To optimise treatment

3)      To implement cascade screening of relatives

Secondary causes of hyperlipidaemia such as hypothyroidism, diabetes and alcohol should be excluded prior to referral.



Suggested investigations prior to referral: 

  • Lipids (preferably fasting)
  • Liver Function Test
  • C Reactive Protein
  • Thyroid Function Test
  • Renal Function Test
  • Glucose
  • CK

Please provide details of any family history relevant to familial hyperlipidaemias  such as premature ischaemic heart disease

  • Lipid Disorders
  • Familial Dyslipidaemias
  • Inherent Metabolic Disorders
  • Cholesterol > 7.5 ( guideline not absolute level)
  • Triglycerides > 5 mmol/L (guideline only this is not an absolute level)


For children with a family history of hyperlipidaemia there is a bimonthly clinic which is run by Dr Fleming and Dr Munyard where they see all family members.
