Procedures of Limited Clinical Benefit

A list of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly commissioning policies can be found here

If a treatment is not routinely funded, or if a person does not meet the criteria for accessing it, an Individual Funding Request can be made.  However, this should only be done where there is evidence of exceptional clinical need.  This means there must be clinical information showing how the person is:

  • Significantly different to the general population of patients with the condition in question.
  • Likely to gain significantly more benefit from the intervention than might be normally expected for patients with that condition.

Examples of general populations (cohorts) include:

  • People with larger breasts and associated conditions such as back and shoulder pain, and skin infections.
  • People with larger symptomatic lipoma
  • People who are unhappy with their appearance (NB:  NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care System does not fund cosmetic surgery to treat psychological problems).

Referrers will need to provide evidence which supports a significant clinical difference over and above those cohorts.  Further information, including the application can be found here
