Spinal Interface Service Referral Criteria


This service is run by a team of GPwSI and extended scope practitioner physiotherapists (Similar to the MSK Interface service available for hips, knees and shoulders)


The service offers specialist assessment, physiotherapy, advice and education.


Clinicians are able to access further targeted imaging such as MRI scans or provide onward referral to Consultant clinics or other services if appropriate e.g.. OT, Podiatry, Appliances, Physiotherapy



Referral Inclusions:


Adults (over 18) with back pain for longer than 6/52 in whom at least one of the following apply:


  • Patients with mild neurology (e.g. reflex/ sensory loss or incomplete power loss) associated with stenosis or radiculopathy
  • Symptoms not responding to first line medication/ manual therapy (having trialled for 6/52)
  • For advanced assessment where diagnosis uncertain, but where serious pathology not suspected
  • Patients for whom a secondary care referral is being considered, but serious pathology is not suspected.
  • Patients who are medically unfit or declining surgery


Exclusion Criteria


  • Red Flag pathology – e.g. bilateral/ rapidly deteriorating neurology, proven neoplasm, cauda equina
  • Patients under 18 years
  • Patients who have had recent spinal surgery in the same region (within last 6/12)
  • Primary cervical pathology
  • Widespread inflammatory disease
  • Primary coccydynia
  • Lumps/ bumps
